Learn Internet Marketing Social Media’s Big NO
With the incredibly fast growth of social media and networking online, marketing for online business owners is becoming a challenge because no one wants to be “sold” to. With the rules of the “game” changing in the blink of an eye, you either have to keep up or get out.
In other words, if you aren’t on Twitter, Facebook, vigorously updating your blog and commenting on a variety of others’ blogs, you have the potential of quickly getting lost in the shuffle. The trick is to “sell” without “selling” these days. Confused yet?
Don’t be. Banner ads, ezines and newsletters are still an important part of your internet marketing business and at this point, remain lucrative vehicles for you to increase your customer list and revenue stream. However, the new advertising approach through social media and blogging is one that takes some additional thought, practice and for lack of a better word, sneakiness!
The process is somewhat backwards than other methods. For instance, when it comes to email marketing you get the person on your list first, and build the relationship second. When utilizing social media, you have to build the relationship first, and promote second. Otherwise people will just think you’re a spammer, and they won’t pay attention. It’s pretty hard to get traffic and sales if nobody’s listening.
When you do promote something, be careful about how you do it. For example, if you’re an affiliate for learning course don’t just say, “Go to this website to buy this course to be successful online”, that will just turn people off and they’re more likely to ignore you. Instead, consider something like this “This is a great course on being successful online. Really enjoyed it!” Basically you’re touting the quality of the product with a testimonial, and you’re helping your followers by sharing the resource with them.
This works the other way too. You get…you give back. Check out other people’s recommendations, purchase products from them if there’s something you need, re-tweet their promotions, and leave comments. The more you give, the more you’ll get back.
Social media is first and foremost, about community, relationships, and giving. After you’ve proven yourself worthy of people’s time, the traffic and sales will come.
Remember, just because social media has taken the Internet by storm doesn’t mean you should stop using traditional methods of marketing your business. There are many limitations to social networking, such as a 140 character limit on Twitter, that don’t allow you to get across what you need to sometimes. So be sure to add social media to your business, not use it to replace the things that are already working.
